Agriculture

Herbicide training for displaced farmers

Agwara & Borgu LGAs, Niger State

When conflict displaced hundreds of farming households at the start of the rainy season, families arrived too late to clear enough land by hand. rSUDiN sourced herbicides from local donors and trained the displaced farmers in safe application alongside early-maturing crop varieties — putting more land under cultivation than manual clearing would have allowed.

Integrated livestock & agroforestry for rural women

Rural communities, Niger State

As nearby forests thinned from farming and fuelwood cutting, women in these communities were losing entire days to the walk for firewood. rSUDiN trained women's groups to grow fast-growing, protein-rich shrubs like Leucaena for animal feed and fuel, and to raise sheep and goats alongside them — cutting the firewood walk and opening a new source of household income.

One Health

Household sanitation & hygiene

Rural communities, Niger State

Without household toilets, human waste in these communities was feeding local livestock and birds, and disease risks like cholera and diarrhoea went largely unrecognized. rSUDiN paired simple, low-cost toilet construction with basic hygiene education — connecting the cost of treating preventable illness directly to the value of safe sanitation.

Environment

Sustainable fishing practices, Kainji Lake

Kainji Lake, Borgu LGA, Niger State

As fish stocks in Kainji Lake declined, some fishermen turned to unapproved agrochemicals to maintain their catch — a practice that damages the lake's breeding grounds and can make the fish unsafe to eat. rSUDiN ran trainings across several sites on the dam on what these practices cost fishing communities in the long run, for both the ecosystem and household safety.
